Sorry, the background isn't too great; looks like low quality stocks, placed randomly, and well the background just really messes it up. But the dragon itself is beautiful especially the head.

thanks for your honest and direct opinion, really appreciated
Okay, let me try to 'explain' things
During the process to me the background was anything but random, if you look closely you see an interaction between the dragon and the rock structures, the way the body and tail flows over the rock shapes. Tha lava stream on the left mirrorrizes the tail to give some symmetry.
The structures on the background is to provide depth and to prevent isolation of the foreground
The rocks are created with a rather flat rock texture which is repainted with the highlights, gapes and shadows to give volume and congruence with the dragon's flow and movement, using mostly a 3 pixel hard brush.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
